Let's Get Physical On September 11, 2008, volunteers at Frisky’s got physical with the monkey’s as they were recovering after their annual physicals. Each year around this time, Dr. Michael Cranfield, the director of animal management, research, and conservation at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and Dr. Keith Gold, DVM at Chadwell Animal Hospital in Abingdon, MD, head out to Frisky’s to give the annual physical that each monkey at Frisky’s needs to ensure the best possible health. This year, the two vets were assisted by Kate Bullock, DVM from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and 8 Vet techs from Dr. Gold’s office. While each monkey is recovering from the effects of the anesthesia, volunteers are holding them in the recovery room until they see eyes start to open, fingers start to grasp, and the monkey can sit up on its own. This is the most precious time of year for the seasoned volunteers at Frisky’s. Most interactions between the volunteers and the monkey’s throughout the year are with iron bars in between them. And on this special night, bonds are formed between human and non-human primates that can never be broken. Although the two oldest monkeys woke up a little bit later in the morning than usual, all were fine by morning -- and not one of them held a grudge! Here's just a few snapshots of the 32 people involved in the Primate Physicals ...
